The Pence Gallery Emerging Artist Award supports the creation of new work by emerging artists in California, and the opportunity to share that work through an exhibit and an artist talk. Artists must use the award of $4,000 to further their work in a significant direction, and may work in any medium, except for video or sound art. ‘Emerging’ is defined as an artist who is early in their art career, who has limited experience exhibiting, but not an extensive solo exhibit history. The artist’s submitted work must be of high caliber, original, and completed within the past five years. Applications must include a resume, an artist statement, and 10-15 digital images of current work, via www.callforentry.org by 9 PM PST on April 4, 2025. The application fee is $35 ($30 for Pence members). The winner will be announced by April 25th.

This year, we will have the first exhibit dedicated to artwork created by Pence Members! Titled Assorted Flavors, the exhibit is from May 1 – June 6, 2025, in the Dowling Community Gallery.

This is an open theme display, and work doesn’t have to be for sale. Each Pence Member may bring in one piece of their choosing in any medium, and we will install it for you! Maximum dimensions are 30” in any direction (including frame), no heavier than 30 lbs., and all work should be ready to install.

Drop-off is April 23 from 11:30 AM – 4:30 PM. We are limited to the first 40 artists, and there is $25 fee per entry.

The Pence’s Slice exhibit is open for submission by California artists working in any medium (except video or sound). This is an ‘open theme’ exhibit, which showcases art that is conceptually thoughtful, technically skilled, and representative of contemporary trends in art. Two-dimensional work must not exceed 36” wide, and three-dimensional work must not exceed 75 lb. Applicants may submit between 1- 3 images of work for review, with an artist statement and resume, at www.callforentry.org, and pay $30 for Pence members ($35 non-Pence members) by May 16^th, 9 PM PST. 

This year’s juror is Susie Kantor. Sheis the Associate Curator & Exhibition Department Head at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis. Her curatorial projects there include Through Their Eyes: Selections from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection; Phillip Byrne, Beatriz Cortez, Kang Seung Lee, Candice Lin: Entangled Writing; Shiva Ahmadi: Strands of Resilience; Loie Hollowell: Tick Tock Belly Clock; and From Moment to Movement: Picturing Protest in the Kramlich Collection. Previously, she worked at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. She holds an MA in Art History with a focus on 17th century Dutch painting from New York University, Institute of Fine Arts.

Exhibit It! is open to artists ages 16 and up who self-select one piece in any medium to bring to the Pence to be displayed in our summer display Exhibit It!

The Pence will accept the first 50 works of art that are submitted. Works will be limited in size to 30” in any direction (including the frame), weighing no more than 50 lbs., and should be ready to install. Artists will complete an artist contract provided upon arrival and pay a required fee of $25 for Members, or $35 for non-Members. Become a Pence Member today to save on all exhibit fees and classes! Participating artists can win the Curator’s Choice award of $100, or the Public Choice award, chosen by visitors to the exhibit.

APPLICATION HAS CLOSED

This pop-up market invites young visual artists, ages 16-25, to display and sell their artwork, ranging from prints and paintings, to ceramics and jewelry. Artists interested in participating must fill out an online application and email images of their work to Katharine Schultz at [email protected]. The Pence provides a venue at $25/accepted artist (free for Pence members!). Artists must bring their own table to display their work, but the Pence will provide chairs. All art sales are handled by participants, and all proceeds go directly to the artist. Please check back for 2025 dates.
