UC DAVIS ELLEN HANSEN MEMORIAL EXHIBIT

May 9-25, 2014

Reception: Friday, May 9, 6-9 PM

ELLEN HANSEN MEMORIAL PRIZE
The Ellen Hansen Memorial Prize is awarded annually to a UCD woman student whose original creative project best demonstrates the bravery and independence of women. The $1,000 Prize is named for the student who was killed in 1981 while hiking in the Santa Cruz mountains. Ellen Hansen's courageous resistance allowed her hiking companion to escape and survive the attack. Her attacker was later identified as the "Trailside Killer."

Ellen's father, Robert J. Hansen, a UC Davis professor of Veterinary Medicine, established the annual award in 1986 as a tribute to his daughter, and to encourage the creative pursuits of other women students. Ellen was a UCD student and a talented artist, musician and poet.

SPRING (CLAY) FLING
April 25-27, 2014

Reception: Friday, April 25, 6-9 PM

Spring (Clay) Fling celebrates the inspired ceramics of San Francisco ceramicist Jacqueline Thompson, Oakland-based Whitney Smith, and Sacramento sculptor Julie Didion. All three artists play with the idea
of function, as Didion crafts naturalistic shoes and handbags with a surreal touch, while Thompson's teapots, tiles and plates show her homage to early 20th century artists and the kitsch of tatto art.
Smith's streamlined vessels play with natural forms, celebrating the influence of the Arts and Crafts tradition.

BLOOM
March 7-April 20, 2014

Reception: Friday, March 14, 6-9 PM

Flower painting as a genre has long been associated with a staid, traditional style of painting, and was largely abandoned as a subject during the 20th century. Eleven contemporary artists delve into the symbolism and form of the flower as a rich subject in their work. Bloom incorporates surreal paintings by Carrie Lederer, with paired down, elegant compostitions by Fred Dalkey, Brenda Louie, Ivy Jacobsen, and Stacey Vetter. The exhibit includes flora on by painters Mary Warner, Ann Marie Campbell and Sandy Delehanty, alongside abstracted compositions by Elaine Bagley Arnoux, Stephen Giannetti, Shirley Hazlett, and Michaele LeCompte.

Floral Weedend: March 15 - 16, 11:30 am - 5 pm
Bloom offers visitors a sensory experience during the weekend of March 14-16, when art is complemented by exquisite floral arrangements by local designers.

Bloom Demo Day: March 16, 2-5 pm
