Randy Brennan   Birds of a Feather

Birds of a Feather explores recent work by regional artists that is thematically tied to the subject of birds. Long studied for their amazing abilities of flight and adaptation, birds are no less a symbol for love, freedom, and domesticity. Delving into the avian realm are local and regional artists, including Gayle BonDurant, Randy Brennan, Jeff Downing, Daphne Gillen, Mitra Fabian, Don Farnsworth, Gerald Heffernon, Malia Landis, Sara Post, Barbara Glynn Prodaniuk, Michael Sarich, Ann Testa, Camille VandenBerge, and Peter VandenBerge.

Wesley Wright   STICKY BUSINESS: Art of the Honeybee

Scientists and farmers have been eager to identify causes of the current decline of the honeybee population. This exhibition, curated by Christopher Beer, blends messages of environmental conservation with an artistic look at the amazing beauty of the honeybee. Artists such as Paula Wenzl Bellacera, Melissa Wood, Donna Billick, and Wesley Wright explore this 'sticky business' in media ranging from ceramics to paintings and prints.

12 Voices: Traveling Art Quilt Exhibit comes to Davis!
Sept. 21-Nov. 14, 2010 | Reception: Friday, Oct. 8, 6-9 PM

12 Voices, organized by the prestigious Studio Art Quilt Associates, showcases the power of a medium that melds traditional approaches to fabric and quilting, with new digital technologies, painting, and poetry. Including works by Deidre Adams, Teresa Barkley, Elizabeth Busch, Linda Colsh, Judith Content, Angela Moll, Clare Plug, Joan Schulze, Susan Shie, Ginny Smith, and Kathy Weaver.

The Pence Gallery is the first West Coast venue for 12 Voices, which has travelled nationwide for 2 years, and includes 26 pieces commissioned for the display. To complement this display, art quilts by local quilters will also be on view, as well as two ‘challenge quilts’, completed by 12 artists/quilters. These works will be raffled off to support the Gallery’s efforts to bring 12 Voices to town.

Artist Deborah Lamoreux’s series Unreal allows passage on a photographic train of thought from reality to pure abstraction. Influcenced by Mark Rothko, she has developed a series of color field photographs that relate the essence of the form. Pushing the depth of field out of focus, Lamoreux’s subject becomes the vibration of warm or cool tones against each other.
