FLÂNEUR'S EYE New Work by Mark Eanes
Sept. 30- Nov. 30, 2018
Reception: Friday, Oct. 12, 6-9 PM
This exhibit is generously sponsored by Kathy Joseph & Tom Doyle.

Mark Eanes’ current mixed-media paintings take his own photographic studies of urban spaces as their starting point. He works with traces of history, such as buildings and architectural fragments photographed in Sicily, that he further obscures with ephemera and classroom debris from his students at California College of the Arts.

Eanes captures the world around him with a unique sense of adventure and awareness. Regarding his process, Eanes says, “My interest is to pay close attention, to glimpse- and then give expression to certain feelings and observations.” His art undoubtedly evokes the spirit of these glimpses, giving us a peek into Eanes’ complex world.

- Artist Statement -

My interest is to pay close attention, to glimpse - and then give expression to certain feelings and observations. In recent years I have turned to photography in order to exercise and strengthen another muscle for seeing. My current work reflects a keen interest in the surface history of the ancient walls, portals and alley ways I witnessed while recently traveling to Napoli, Italy and Palermo, Sicily.

My working process consists of many layers...time and material.
In the studio I move from knowing to not knowing.
From reckless abandon to careful consideration.
The act is never tedious or boring,
for I feel as though I am always betting the house on the final outcome.

My favorite moment is when the conversation is over.
That can take days, weeks, even months.
The moment of conclusion is to know there is nothing more to be done -
that everything I could possibly say
has been said, and at last I can step away
and think to myself, this works.
The act of painting is the act of discovery.

It is adventurous.
It is arduous.
Ultimately the joy is in the doing.
The making of the thing.
The work itself.
