Jeff Carter’s paintings capture family, friends, and colleagues that have impacted his life in a deeply personal way. By depicting models close to him, he shines a poetic light on their personal stories as well as his own. His work, while inspired by the surrounding narratives in his world, aims to connect with outside viewers.
His painting style employs loose brush strokes, emphasizing a tranquil atmosphere around his subjects. Carter is also known for creating the impression of refracted light, adding a sense of warm nostalgia to his paintings. By illuminating the lives of others, Carter’s paintings evoke the open vulnerability of his loved ones- making the encounter with his work truly close and personal.
A painting has real possibilities when it successfully teaches us something about ourselves. I am captivated by the figure because it has the potential to deliver a candid narrative about who we are, while enhancing the poetic subtleties present in all of our lives. In simple terms, I bring narratives to light and render the human form. However, these paintings communicate ideas, which do much more. With each painting, I simultaneously aim to reveal human conditions that are universal and timeless, as well as cultural facets that are unique and fleeting.
The people addressed in each of these works are paramount to how I see the world around me. Figures that I portray are derived from family, friends, colleagues, and students, whom I consider to be very special; all of them have personally touched my life in their own critical way. However, each model is a vehicle that enables me to tell a story that is much greater than any one person. With these narratives, I strive to connect with my audience in an intimate manner, even though my viewers do not yet know these people in the same capacity that I do. Each narrative delivers a literal truth about who I am and where I have been. More importantly, this body of work reveals detailed truths about who we are as a whole.
