CHARLES CUNNINGHAM: Chasing the Horizon
March 10 - April 16, 2017
Reception: Friday, March 10, 6-9 PM

Sponsored by Kit & Bonnie Lam , Ronald & Rosie Soohoo, Terence Leung, and Frances Leung.

I was born in Stockton in 1950. My initial interest in art started after seeing articles in magazines about the post-war New York artists leading the way in a new understanding of contemporary art.  I grew up studying the works of DeKooning, Rauschenberg, Hoffman, Still and many others.  At a younger age I was exposed to many European and early American landscape paintings at a local art museum.  I was impressed by the representations of nature, and by the clever illusions created to capture scenes.

While in school there was a pressure to further the abstract conversation.  I was very comfortable there for a long time.  At the same time, I felt a certain recalcitrance over the slight towards landscape paintings.

My approach to landscape is built on an abstract foundation.  It is important to paint wet on wet, often rhythmically to create opportunities of spontaneity.  This approach allows for a conversation between the composition and myself.  I try to provide the basic outline for my paintings, but during process I allow my work to go where it wants.  Similarly I make no attempt to match natures' color, I have my own limited palette.  My paintings are about putting my sense of color and form together.

Composing is what I find challenging; it is what I love about art.
