JOHN STUART BERGER: Fauna Exotica
January 6 - 29, 2017
Reception: Friday, Jan. 13, 6-9 PM

John Stuart Berger's imaginative set of creatures in Fauna Exotica are portraits of real and imagined animals. Each portrait is depicted in great detail with an eye on the surreal, macabre, and just plain weird.  Most of his creatures were originally adapted from crude sketches, that were lying around his studio. Some of the paintings were derived from partial sketches and reassembled with other sketches to create a composite painting.  This fractured merging of bits and pieces the artist calls ‘frankenpainting’- giving a nod to the infamous Dr. Frankenstein who created a monster out of body parts from various corpses.

Berger’s work can range in sensibility from dark and menacing to light and uplifting. He captures the essence of a real animal, with an eye on exaggerating bits that seem human, adding giant eyes or a knowing grin. In all, his ‘fauna exotica’ captivate with their unique charm and unsettling characteristics.
