LIZ WEBB & DEDE DEGRAFFENRIED: REMAINS

June 5 - 28, 2015
2nd Friday ArtAbout Reception: June 12, 6-9 PM

LIZ WEBB
I’ve been surrounded by art my whole life. I learned everything I know about clay from my mom, Clarice Baker. I was also exposed to art through her art history books, trips to museums and listening to her teach. I don’t have any formal art training, but what I have works for me.

I created my first necklace when I was 10. I made it from bottlebrush seeds I gathered from an old tree in the Arboretum on campus. I punched holes in the seeds with a nail and hammer, and strung them for my mom. I still love stringing beads and still look for organic materials like stone, wood, and shell—thing with a soul, history, age, and natural beauty.

I sold my first sculpture of two ceramic dancers when I was 12, at an art festival in Davis. I had mixed feelings about letting those early pieces go and it’s something I struggle with every time I have a show. It’s wonderful when people like your work, amazing when they want it in their homes, and a little sad when the piece is gone.

DEDE DEGRAFFENRIED

What inspires me as an artist are textural and thematic contrasts, the interplay between natural and manmade objects, and above all, stories – most without direct lines or completion.  I scoured beaches and patches of rock below sea cliffs around Santa Barbara for two days after a big storm last year, looking for pieces scattered like torn pages from a book by high waves. This is both a tragic and wonderful world to explore. Locked within each object is a history I’ll never fully know, but wholly respect.  It’s the same when I find old photos, prints, and beautifully aged items in antique and junk shops.  In my art pieces, I don’t set out to tell their stories, or give them a new life, but rather to build upon the moment that they spoke to me.
